About me

A photo of Harry Rose

As implied by my website address, my name is Harry Rose and I'm a second year Computer Science student studying at the school of Electronics and Computer Science at Southampton University.

As you might have guessed, my main intrest is in computers (more interests later). I'm a linux user and am currently using the Gentoo Linux distribution as my main operating system.

I've used loads of distros in the past (Ubuntu, Debian, and Mandriva (formerly Mandrake) to name a few). The reason I've switched to Gentoo is to try to get a better understanding of linux as Gentoo is a lot more manual than Ubuntu, which was my last distro.

What I mean by this is that whereas with Ubuntu there are lots of GUIs to get everything done, a lot of Gentoo is configured through directly editing config files, although GUIs can be installed of course.

As well as Linux, I also have a Windows box which I just generally 'faff around' with. It's a decent spec, 2.67GHz intel core 2 duo, 1333MHz fsb, 4GB of ram and a Nvidia 8800GT. It's main job at the moment is running winamp, and it seems to be doing quite a good job. At the time of writing this page, the machine is running Windows XP Pro +SP2 (32 bit version). I would be using 64 bit if only DLink made 64b drivers for my wireless nic. I'm contemplating putting vista on, but I dont want to use half of my resources just rendering the interface.

The main reason for the specs of the Windows box is because I do quite a lot of fiddling about with music production software and occasionally play computer games (shocking). If anybody feel's like buying a new game, I recommend Portal, which can be bought from Steam.
