My computer equipment

Well, it's the middle of the night and I don't feel like going to bed yet so I'll describe my computer kit to anybody who will listen (/read).

I have a few boxes. I've just replaced my desktop PC, but stole some components out of the old one for use in the new. I've not decided what I'll do with the old box yet, I'm thinking maybe use it as a rather expensive PVR/media centre.

I have a tendancy to collect PC components for some reason. I seem to have millions of hard drives all over the place doing nothing. I managed to surge a drive not so long ago so I had to buy a new drive so I could swap the controller board over. Anyway, I couldn't find an exact match so attempted a very similar board (just using a different firmware version), which span the disk up but didn't move the heads.

Usually these components end up getting taken to pieces, which in the case of hard drives generally means they're not much good any more. I'm trying to cut back on my disk murdering however, and so more are being put to actual use.

My 'work machine'

The machine I do pretty much all of my work on is a Fujitsu Siemens Pi1505 laptop. Shockingly I'm rather sketchy on the exact specs (as I didn't build it) and it's all the way on the other side of the room... anyway, here's an attempt at remembering them.

CPU
1.6GHz Intel Centrino Duo
RAM
512MB (not sure on any of the other specs)
HDD
250GB WD Scorpio Black - Sata 3Gb/s 7200RPM, 16MB Cache
OS
Gentoo Linux

Nothing particularly exciting here, once I get to the box (and remember to update this page) I'll update this with some more detailed information.

My 'faffing' box

This box is higher spec than my work machine because I mainly use it for music production and gaming. I decided not to spend too much money on it when I was building it, all in all it cost just over £400 (excluding monitor). It has been a while since I built it and so the specs are a bit hazy again, but here's how I remember them.

CPU
2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (1.3GHz FSB, 4MB L2 Cache)
RAM
4GB DDR2 PC2-6400
HDD
  • A SATA Seagate Barracuda, 250GB 7200rpm 16MB cache
  • A PATA Seagate Barracuda, 250GB 7200rpm (not sure about the cache)
  • A SATA fujitsu-siemens disk I stole from my laptop, 80GB (supposedly, it may have an HPA because I can only find 50 or so gigs at the moment).
Graphics
Nvidia 8600GT 512MB DDR3 RAM (again, rather sketchy here)
Sound
Just using on-board at the moment, will be buying a new sound card soon hopefully.
Monitor
Samsung SM2032BW
OS
Windows 7 Professional 64bit
Music stuff
See the music section for all the music stuff I have running on this machine

There is almost certainly something I've left out. Still, that gives you an idea.

My 'in pieces collecting dust' box

This machine is ancient, I can only recall vague details about it...

CPU
1.6GHz AMD Duron
RAM
1GB
HDD
Sitting in front of me on my desk
Graphics
Nvidia something :)
Sound card
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
PSU
None :P
OS
Originally a mixture of Gentoo Linux and Windows XP
